So...
hello everyone! We realize its been awhile since we have updated on our
endeavors here. You certainly could say we have been kept busy with
working in the garden, hosting volunteers, and raising our chickens (and
working our day jobs!).
You can see from our photos, the work
has paid off and the garden has exploded into abundance and beauty! We
would like to thank our volunteers for helping us bring it to life. We
are pleased with the results of our permaculture inspired curved beds,
the vegetables are happy, and it really makes the garden beautiful.
The chickens are happy too! They are now roaming freely in our
backyard, with the use of a solar powered electric fence. So far we have
had no problems with predators (except for 2 lost to the neighbor's
dog), and the chickens (mostly) stay in the fenced area, which is a good
size. We have a few little guys who like escape during the day and feed
nearby but we have decided to let them go ahead and do that, they always find their way back in the evening.
They really do a good job of cleaning up the ground, so we are going to
move them next into an area we hope to develop next year into a
hugelkultur swale orchard. That way they will prepare the ground for us a
bit. We will be beginning to develop this site in the fall. Heres a
video to give you an idea of hugelkultur:

On our to do list for the fall:
- process and store all our garden produce we can, including setting up an insulated area in our crawl space for root cellaring
- build a nesting coop for the chickens.
- plant our mushroom spores in our waiting logs. We are waiting for the weather to cool off a bit for that.
- start developing the hugelkultur area for an orchard
- slaughter and freeze our surplus cockerels - winter chicken dinners!
- try to make some progress on fixing the foundation on the train
station, to use as a gardening/wwoofer/visitor space for next year!
There will be more information soon on that, as it is an important
project for us in terms of working towards our goal of hosting new
immigrants. It is something we will be needing funding/donations for,
and help with renovating.
Whew! We would like to thank you for your interest if you made it to the end of this long post!
And thats how the cookie crumbles these days! Again, we love visitors,
so if anyone is interested in coming out for a visit, do a bit of work,
go for a swim and sauna etc, let us know!
- Sincerely, Us Folks at the Landing Well Project
