Spring has crept it's way in at last! The trees are showing their greenery, the frogs sing their chorus every night, and we have had plenty of lovely bird visitors (photos coming soon).

We were lucky enough to have a lovely couple from France staying with us the past couple weeks, helping out in the garden, and cooking us delicious food. They left yesterday, we will miss them! It was a very nice time. Now, we look forward to meeting Simon on Thursday, our next visitor/volunteer from Montreal.

This is one of the visitors from France, Ann.

Things are really taking shape in the garden! This year we are trying a new technique of bedding. We made raised beds that are contoured, inspired by the permaculture swale design. These prevent soil erosion and hold water very efficiently. And they look pretty cool! Another new method we are trying is using cardboard as sheet mulching. We started with a sprinkling of manure to feed the decomposition of the sod underneath and then placed sheets of cardboard on top to kill the grass. We soaked the cardboard well and then placed potatoes on top of that. Lots of hay on top of that, some well rotted manure and worm castings to feed to decomposition of the mulch. Kind of like a sandwich! This method is supposed to create excellent yield of potatoes. Were excited to see how these methods result! You can watch a video here which inspired us to try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1OShZZUt0k&noredirect=1

The bees also arrived! Our friend from Falcon Lake facilitated the bees this year.
Next: chickens!
